Hawaii – an archipel consisting of 137 islands – lies in the heart of the Pacific Ocean.

These islands were originally called “Sandwich Islands” by their explorer James Cook before being renamed by King Kamehameha the Great in 1810, when the Kingdom of Hawaii was founded.

Today it is the 50th state of the United States of America.
